Saturday, April 16, 2005 Smile!I just picked up Brian Wilson's Smile album. I love it. I can't stop listening to it. I picked it up yesterday along with Nick Cave's Abattoir Blues, Tom Waits' Real Gone and The Buena Vista Social Club. I haven't yet had a chance to get to the other three albums, as much as I do want to hear them. Smile has been taking up all of my attention. I haven't loved a piece of music this much in a while. You can hear a live performance of Smile at Carnegie Hall, if you're interested, here on the NPR website. The live performance is incredible. So, if you have an hour to kill and want something great to listen to, listen to hour two on the page. Oh. And I posted the schedule for this Sunday's My Vocabulary today on the My Vocabulary blog. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 My First EarthquakeThe earthquake early this morning caught me by surprise.I had been writing until about 2 am and so my head was still buzzing when the earthquake came at 4. I was in something of a half-awake state. It scared the hell out of me, but not because I was afraid to die in an earthquake. No. I didn't even realize it was an earthquake. All I knew was that I had been startled into consciousness by the sudden and seemingly unnatural shaking of my already rickety brass bed. The possibility that the earth had done it didn't cross my mind. (I guess I haven't been in California long enough yet.) After I overcame the initial paralysis of the situation, I looked under my bed to make sure there wasn't some goblin, murderer or thief under there. I carefully and quietly went downstairs to see that I hadn't left my door unlocked. Only after I had exhausted all other explanations, including the supernatural (ghosts? I was ready to go that far), did I think to look on the internet and see if we had had an earthquake. And there it was. A nice 4 am wakeup call emanating from eastern San Diego County. A 4. So now I know what that feels like. Maybe next time I won't be so disoriented by it. One can only hope. Monday, April 11, 2005 Two Notes -- UES and My VocabularyHey.I'm up over at Unpleasant Event Schedule. Two poems. Check them out. Also, I've posted the playlist from yesterday's radio show over at the My Vocabulary blog. It's complete with links to where you can find work by the poets who read on the show, and where you can buy their books. Also, if you were wondering what any of the songs we played were, well, they're all there too. I recorded yesterday's show digitally and it came out really sharp. If I can figure out how to provide that, streaming, and whether or not it is legal to do so, I'll let you know. |
