Remember to watch out for fraudulent charities (see my previous post or read the Washington Post article yourself at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/01/AR2005090101398.html).

And don't forget the pajama project (http://www.pajamaprogram.org/) and the cell phone drive (http://www.phones4life.org/) that I told you about two posts ago.

I'll let you know if I come across any more information.

Meanwhile, an article in Slate, "The Rebellion of the Talking Heads," by Jack Shafer has kept my attention for a little while this morning (http://slate.msn.com/id/2125581/?nav=ais). It's an interesting editorial about what we've been seeing and hearing on the television for the last week.

FYI -- A Letter from Tech Services

In the days since the devastating damage from Hurricane Katrina along the American Southeast it has come to our attention that there are a number of various hoaxes, internet scams and viruses that are beginning to circulate via e-mail. Perhaps the most serious is the spread of online fraud by con artists in an attempt to profit from the ongoing tragedy in New Orleans and elsewhere. These scams generally come in the form of e-mail messages or postings in online forums, soliciting for donations for the victims and survivors of the attacks. Typical messages claim to be part of an "Express Relief Fund", "Victims Survivor Fund," or solicit Red Cross donations but contain a link to an unconnected website, which may even look legitimate. All employees are encouraged to utilize reputable organizations that are taking donations--including the American Red Cross , the United Way and a site set up by online retailer Amazon.com.

For a current news story about online fraud, please read: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/01/AR2005090101398.html

Finally, there is a real danger that internet viruses may appear in the near future, taking advantage of the public's intense desire for information and pictures. These viruses could appear as forwarded pictures, screensavers, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and webpages that can cause damage to your computer. Please be careful when opening forwarded attachments.

An Email from My Mother

Last night at the gallery Eric was pointing out that lots of people would like to help but money is already tight. Today I read in the WSJ of organizations to help that do not involve cash donations. An ER physician in NYC is collecting used cell phones to be distributed to the sick and elderly -- they are reprogrammed to only dial 911 and are activated for free, www.phones4life.org or 212 730 4699. The Pajama Program is gathering new pajamas for the refugees in the Houston Astrodome http://www.pajamaprogram.org/ 646 522 6836. In Baton Rouge there is a community foundation that needs everything including pet food, they expect to have 500,000 refugees flock to the city from New Orleans.
